Capcom’s Busy Year Continues: Introducing Pragmata, Their Bold New Sci-Fi IP

The year 2026 has been an absolute whirlwind for Capcom. From major updates and expansions in their flagship franchises to fresh announcements keeping fans on their toes, the Japanese giant shows no signs of slowing down.

Among the highlights is Pragmata; Capcom’s brand-new original IP that blends science fiction action-adventure with a unique hacking twist. After years of development and multiple delays, Pragmata is finally landing on shelves (and digital stores) very soon, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most intriguing releases of the year.

Originally teased back in 2020 during the PlayStation 5 reveal event, Pragmata marks Capcom’s first major new franchise in quite some time. Built on the powerful RE Engine, the game promises a fresh take on third-person action, combining intense combat, real-time strategy, and clever puzzle-solving elements.

A Story Set on the Cold Lunar Frontier

Pragmata takes place in the near future, where humanity has developed an advanced material called Lunafilament — a revolutionary substance capable of 3D-printing everything from microchips to entire buildings. Research into this technology is centered on a lunar research station, but all communication with the facility suddenly goes dark.

A dispatch team is sent to investigate. Among them is Hugh Williams, a skilled system auditor and spacefarer. Shortly after arrival, a massive lunar quake hits, separating Hugh from his team. Stranded and vulnerable in the desolate, hostile environment, he is rescued by an unexpected companion: a mysterious young android girl named Diana.

What begins as a chance encounter turns into an unlikely partnership. Together, Hugh and Diana must navigate the cold, eerie corridors of the lunar research station, battle rogue AI-controlled robots and security systems, and find a way back to Earth. The story explores themes of isolation, humanity, artificial intelligence, and the bond that forms between two very different beings trying to survive against overwhelming odds.

Diana isn’t just a sidekick but she’s a fully playable co-protagonist with her own abilities. Hugh handles the gunplay and physical combat, while Diana provides crucial hacking support, opening up enemy defenses, solving environmental puzzles, and even manifesting digital projections. Their dynamic feels like a futuristic buddy-cop story with heart: Hugh is sarcastic yet kind-hearted, while Diana is curious, resilient, and full of surprises.

Gameplay: Action Meets Real-Time Hacking

What sets Pragmata apart is its innovative “two-in-one” gameplay loop. While Hugh engages enemies with third-person shooting and tactile combat, Diana simultaneously hacks into systems in real time. This creates intense, multitasking moments where players must split their attention; shooting accurately while solving hacking mini-games to weaken or disable foes.

  • Combat: Fast-paced gunplay with a variety of weapons and upgrades.
  • Hacking: Strategic puzzle elements that feel rewarding and tense, especially during larger enemy encounters.
  • Exploration: Traverse the atmospheric lunar station, discover 3D-printed environments (including surreal, twisted recreations of Earth locations like a New York-inspired area), and return to safe “Shelter” hubs to upgrade gear and plan your next moves.
  • Enemies: Hostile robots and security systems influenced by a rogue AI called IDUS that controls much of the station.

A playable demo titled Pragmata: Sketchbook is already available on Steam and consoles, letting players test the unique combat and traversal systems firsthand. Early previews praise the satisfying gunplay and the clever way action and strategy intertwine, though some note the multitasking approach may feel polarizing for certain players.

Platforms and Release Date

Pragmata is coming to multiple platforms:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • PC (via Steam)

The game was originally planned for April 24, 2026, but Capcom recently moved the release forward by one week. It will now launch on April 17, 2026 for most regions (with the Nintendo Switch 2 version in Japan and parts of Asia sticking closer to the original April 24 date). Pre-orders are live, and early bird bonuses as well.

Final Thoughts

n a year full of Capcom heavy-hitters, Pragmata stands out because it’s something genuinely new. It doesn’t rely on established lore or fan service — instead, it bets on fresh characters, a mysterious sci-fi setting, and gameplay that demands both reflexes and brains. The budding relationship between the gruff spacefarer Hugh and the wide-eyed android Diana adds an emotional layer that many players are already connecting with.

Whether you’re drawn to the atmospheric horror-tinged exploration, the satisfying combat, or the deeper questions about AI and what makes us human, Pragmata looks poised to deliver a memorable adventure.
