Laufey — The Giant Who Changed Everything
Laufey, also known as Faye, is one of the most important characters in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. Though she is gone before the story begins, her courage, wisdom, and love shape the journey of her husband, Kratos, and their son, Atreus.
A skilled warrior from the realm of Jötunheim, Laufey was a Jötunn—one of the Giants. She chose the name Faye while living in Midgard, where she built a life with Kratos. She understood the dangers surrounding the Nine Realms and made plans to protect her family long after her death.
A mother’s final wish
The story begins after Faye’s death. Her final request is for Kratos and Atreus to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in all the realms. Their journey fulfills that wish, but it also reveals how much Faye knew about the future—and how carefully she prepared her family for it.
As father and son travel through dangerous lands, they discover signs of Faye’s influence everywhere. Her markings guide them, her choices open paths, and the truth about her past changes how they understand their place in the realms.
Faye and Kratos
Faye brought warmth and understanding into Kratos’s life. She saw the person behind his silence and helped him become a more patient father. Even after her death, her memory pushes him to face his past and make different choices for Atreus.
Faye and Atreus
Faye’s love for Atreus is at the heart of his story. She left him clues about his heritage and the world he belongs to. As he learns more about himself, he also discovers that his mother’s plans reach far beyond the family home.
Why Laufey matters
Laufey is more than a mystery for Kratos and Atreus to solve. Her legacy connects the games’ central themes: family, identity, fate, and the power to choose a different path. Her presence is felt throughout the journey—even when she is not there to guide it herself.
Laufey’s story is a reminder that a person’s influence can endure long after they are gone.
